From bar to bangle
How a fine platinum bar becomes a 20 g Pt950 platinum bangle, and what each step adds to the bill.
Fine bar
It starts as 19 g of fine platinum, 999.5. Pure platinum is too soft to hold a setting.
Melt and alloy
Melted at 1,768 °C with 1 g of ruthenium: 20 g of Pt950 platinum, hard enough to hold a shape.
Draw the wire
Poured into a steel mould to cast a rod, then pulled through smaller and smaller dies into wire. The making charge starts here.
Shape
Cut, bent round a mandrel and soldered shut into a bangle.
Decorate
Granules, engraving and set stones, by hand. Stones are billed on top of the metal.
Polish and hallmark
Polished, assayed and stamped PT950 inside the band. Pt950 means 95% platinum.

Where the numbers come from
- Source
- Every rate here is compiled by goldratetodayin.com and refreshed at 12 am, 6 am and 6 pm India time, and checked every 15 minutes through the morning, when the day’s rates are published, so a change shows within minutes.
- Indian rates
- Gold city by city, at 24K, 22K and 18K as each city’s market quotes it; silver and platinum at one rate for the whole country. All in rupees, before GST and making charges. 14K gold and the lower grades of silver and platinum are worked out from the fine rate.
- Other countries
- Gold at the local board rate, by city where one is published and by country where not. Where there is no board rate, and for silver and platinum, international prices converted to your currency at mid-market exchange rates. All before local tax.
- History
- Ten years, day by day. Where a place’s own published rates begin later than that, the earlier line follows international prices, scaled to meet them.

- Is platinum the same as white gold?
- No. White gold is gold alloyed with white metals and usually plated with rhodium, which wears off with time and needs redoing. Platinum is white right through and needs no plating, which is part of why it costs more as jewellery.

Platinum jewellery can still cost more than gold: platinum is about 11% denser, so the same design weighs more, Pt950 is purer than 22K gold, and it is harder to work, so making charges are higher.
- How much does a 4 g Pt950 platinum ring cost in the Philippines?

- It has increased by ₱11.46 a gram (0.37%) since yesterday, to ₱3,128.86. The platinum rate in the Philippines follows the international platinum price, converted at the PHP exchange rate. Much of it goes into catalytic converters for cars, and most is mined in South Africa, so car sales and mine supply move it.
- How much has the platinum price in the Philippines changed in a year?
- Platinum is up 7.4% over the last twelve months. The price history graph on this page goes back ten years.
- What will the platinum rate in the Philippines be tomorrow? Will it increase or decrease?
