From bar to bangle

Choose a piece
Drag to turn it round or tip it over.

Fine bar

It starts as 19 g of fine platinum, 999.5. Pure platinum is too soft to hold a setting.

Melt and alloy

Melted at 1,768 °C with 1 g of ruthenium: 20 g of Pt950 platinum, hard enough to hold a shape.

Draw the wire

Poured into a steel mould to cast a rod, then pulled through smaller and smaller dies into wire. The making charge starts here.

Shape

Cut, bent round a mandrel and soldered shut into a bangle.

Decorate

Granules, engraving and set stones, by hand. Stones are billed on top of the metal.

Polish and hallmark

Polished, assayed and stamped PT950 inside the band. Pt950 means 95% platinum.

      What does Pt950 platinum mean?
Pt950 is 95% platinum, usually alloyed with ruthenium or palladium, and is the standard for platinum jewellery; pieces are stamped PT950. On 7 Nov 2026, 950 platinum in Durban is R 778,92 a gram and R 24 227,14 for a troy ounce.
Is platinum the same as white gold?
No. White gold is gold alloyed with white metals and usually plated with rhodium, which wears off with time and needs redoing. Platinum is white right through and needs no plating, which is part of why it costs more as jewellery.
Is platinum more expensive than gold in Durban?
Not today: on 7 Nov 2026, a gram of fine platinum in Durban is R 819,92 and of 24K gold R 2 162,42, so platinum is 62% cheaper a gram. Platinum jewellery can still cost more than gold: platinum is about 11% denser, so the same design weighs more, Pt950 is purer than 22K gold, and it is harder to work, so making charges are higher.
How much does a 4 g Pt950 platinum ring cost in Durban?
At today's rate, its 3.8 grams of fine platinum are worth R 3 116. A 12% making charge adds R 373,88 and 15% VAT adds R 523,43, for about R 4 013. Making charges vary by jeweller and design; the calculator on this page works out any piece.
Why is the platinum price rising today in Durban?
It has increased by R 1,12 a gram (0.14%) since yesterday, to R 819,92. The platinum rate in Durban follows the international platinum price, converted at the ZAR exchange rate. Much of it goes into catalytic converters for cars, and most is mined in South Africa, so car sales and mine supply move it.
How much has the platinum price in Durban changed in a year?
Platinum is down 4.6% over the last twelve months. The price history graph on this page goes back ten years.
What will the platinum rate in Durban be tomorrow? Will it increase or decrease?
No one can know it in advance: tomorrow's rate follows international prices and the exchange rate overnight. Over the last 10 rates, since 27 Oct 2026, it has fallen 0.6%. This page shows the new rate as soon as it is set, and the last ten days and the chart show which way it has been moving.
Do these platinum rates include tax?
No. VAT of 15% and the jeweller's making charge are added on top. The calculator on this page adds both.
How often is the platinum rate in Durban updated?
At midnight, 6 am and 6 pm India time, and every 15 minutes through the morning while the day’s rates are published, so a change shows within minutes. The date in the page title is the day the rates are for.
